It is among the longest-running art exhibitions in Italy. Forms in the Green was founded in 1971, the brainchild of Mario Guidotti, a collector, art enthusiast and connoisseur of modern and contemporary art, and was the first exhibition in Italy to propose visions of Land Art, that form of art in which sculpture interacts with space and landscape.
A trend that started in the late 1960s in the United States to view art in extraordinary places. The Horti Leonini, an example of a 16th-century Italian garden in the heart of San Quirico, becomes the natural exhibition space for the show.
The Horti Leonini and Palazzo Chigi in the historic center, along with some of the world’s most iconic landscape sites of San Quirico and Bagno Vignoni become the setting in which Forme nel Verde comes to life each year between the months of July and November. An artist or a group of artists, as a collective, are chosen by the art direction and the City Council to exhibit their works, placing them, after choosing a specific theme to address, in the time and space that San Quirico offers to the artists’ idea. This is how contemporary art and its universal value take shape.
In the marvelous setting of the Horti Leonini, in more than fifty years of history, the greatest masters of Italian and international art such as Arnaldo Pomodoro, Costantino Nivola, Pietro Cascella, Mirella Forlivesi, Lorenzo Guadagnucci; and again, Manzù, Alessandro Tagliolini, Carmelo Cappello, Matthew Spender, Michelangelo Pistoletto up to Maurizio Cattelan have exhibited their works.
Forme nel Verde is the event organized by the Municipality of San Quirico d’Orcia capable of attracting and proposing the most important artists and young contemporary Italian and international talents.
