The ancient Via Francigena that joined Canterbury to Rome in the Middle Ages has been rediscovered by modern wayfarers, who set out along a splendid and surprising route.
For those who are walking the entire path, Stage 36, which leads from San Quirico d’Orcia to Radicofani will appear as one of the most beautiful and challenging of the Tuscan Via Francigena and beyond.
San Quirico is reached by taking Stage 35 from Ponte d’Arbia after 26.25 km, which is covered in about 6 hours of walking. From San Quirico d’Orcia, in Piazza Chigi, Stage 36 begins, one of the most challenging legs of the Tuscan route, 33.02 km long that is covered in about 7 hours, with climbs and descents in the heart of the Val d’Orcia. After just 5 km, you reach Vignoni, which dominates the Val d’Orcia, and then you descend to Bagno Vignoni, a unique spa center.

A long up-and-down stretch between the loops of the Orcia and Paglia rivers leads to the ancient hospice Le Briccole. From here begins a hard climb to the stage point at Radicofani to 790 m. slm. Water and refreshment points are in Bagno Vignoni and Gallina (bar 500 m from the track, on the Cassia).

The Credential, or “pilgrim’s passport,” is the fundamental document of the wayfarer that allows access, with facilities, to accommodations along the itinerary. In San Quirico d’Orcia, pilgrims can receive their stamp at the tourist office at 33 Via Dante Alighieri.
